All About Ultrasound:
One sure way that we can help you to find out if you are pregnant, and
then determine approximately how far along you are, is through a limited
ultrasound. Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves which “bounce” off
of the baby and produce a picture on a screen of it moving around in
the uterus.
With ultrasound, the gestational sac can be seen as early as 4 ½ weeks.
The tiny embryo can be observed and measured by 5 ½ weeks. At
six weeks, which is the point at which we prefer to do ultrasounds, we
can tell if the pregnancy is viable, and able to continue on its natural
course. Using measurement, we can estimate how many weeks old the baby
is.
If you are considering abortion, it is important that you first have
an ultrasound. Approximately 31% of all positive pregnancy tests turn
out not to be viable pregnancies. An ultrasound at 6 weeks can show
if the baby is firmly implanted. Some
fertilized eggs never make it out of the fallopian tubes, and can cause
the tube to rupture as it grows larger. This is called an ectopic pregnancy.
An ultrasound can also diagnose this dangerous condition so that you
can seek immediate medical attention.
Our highly trained and experienced medical staff will be glad to provide
you with a free, confidential ultrasound. You will then be provided with
accurate information on your pregnancy status. Then our trained, experienced,
lay counselors can provide you with the information and referrals you
need.
